In November of last year, Forrester analyst Mike Gualtieri published the provocatively titled Java Is A Dead-End For Enterprise App Development. The report also noted that Go and R have made big gains in usage recently. RedMonk has released its programming language rankings for early 2016, and as in the past, JavaScript and Java ranked first and second, respectively. The rest of the top ten included PHP, Python, C#, C++, Ruby, CSS, C, and Objective-C. That versatility has translated into increased usage and buzz. “The most important takeaway is that the language frequently written off for dead and the language sometimes touted as the future have shown sustained growth and traction and remain, according to this measure, the most popular offerings.” RedMonk has updated its ranking of the top programming languages, and JavaScript and Java came out on top. As other language rankings ( such as TIOBE) have shown, the snake-y language has expanded beyond its origins as a generalist language and is now used in a variety of niche industries, such as data science. RedMonk bases its language rankings from GitHub data such as the number of pull requests in various languages and discussions on developer info-sharing site Stack Overflow. “By the narrowest of margins, JavaScript edged Java for the top spot in the rankings, but as always, the difference between the two is so marginal as to be insignificant,” said Stephen O’Grady, RedMonk principal analyst.
